Job Summary:
An Occupational Health Nurse provides specialized medical care and health management services in workplace settings. They focus on preventing and managing occupational health issues, promoting employee wellness, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Health Assessments:
- Conduct pre-employment health screenings and periodic health evaluations to assess employees' fitness for specific job roles.
- Perform routine health assessments, including monitoring vital signs, conducting physical exams, and evaluating work-related health risks.
Injury and Illness Management:
- Provide immediate care for work-related injuries and illnesses, including first aid and emergency treatment.
- Manage and document cases of workplace injuries, coordinate with healthcare providers, and ensure appropriate follow-up care.
Health and Safety Programs:
- Develop and implement occupational health programs and policies, including vaccination programs, health promotion activities, and wellness initiatives.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement measures to minimize exposure to workplace hazards.
Compliance and Regulations:
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, including those set by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or equivalent regulatory bodies.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws and regulations and ensure workplace practices align with legal requirements.
Employee Education and Training:
- Provide training and education to employees on health-related topics, such as ergonomics, safe work practices, and stress management.
- Develop and deliver educational programs and workshops to enhance employee awareness of health and safety issues.
Health Promotion and Wellness:
- Promote employee wellness through health screenings, fitness programs, and lifestyle counseling.
- Develop initiatives to improve overall workplace health and support employees in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Case Management:
- Manage and track employee health cases, including return-to-work plans and accommodation needs.
- Coordinate with external healthcare providers, insurance companies, and other stakeholders as needed.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records, including incident reports, health assessments, and treatment documentation.
- Prepare reports on health trends, incidents, and program effectiveness for management and regulatory compliance.
Emergency Response:
- Develop and implement emergency response plans and procedures for health crises or workplace emergencies.
- Participate in emergency response drills and ensure readiness for various scenarios.
Skills and Qualifications:
Education and Certification:
- Completion of an accredited nursing program (Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or equivalent).
- Current and valid nursing license (Registered Nurse (RN) or equivalent) as required by the region or country of employment.
- Certification in Occupational Health Nursing (COHN) or equivalent is often preferred or required.
Clinical Skills:
- Proficiency in conducting health assessments, managing workplace injuries, and providing first aid.
- Ability to implement and manage health and safety programs effectively.
Regulatory Knowledge:
- Understanding of occupational health and safety regulations and standards.
- Ability to stay current with changes in laws and regulations affecting workplace health.
Communication:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with employees, management, and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to provide clear instructions and educational materials to employees.
Problem-Solving:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address health issues and implement effective solutions.
